CBR Data Storage & Protection Zone

While for more organisations total data volumes are doubling around every 10 months, according to analysts, capacity planning is not the only challenge facing CIOs and their storage administrators. The need to protect data while at rest as well as while it is 'in-flight' has also rise with the sensitivity of the data and increasingly demanding regulatory controls.

Growing data volumes have also put pressure on backup windows - in some case backup windows are becoming a real crunch point - and made it more important that restores are also quick and effective. The general storage infrastructure has also grown in complexity in the era of virtualization and cloud computing. But all the while, the business demands rapid and flexible access to its business information.

Here in this CBR Data Storage & Protection Zone you'll find a growing number of resources over the coming weeks that shine a light on the thorny issue of data storage and protection. A CBR Storage Reader Survey will take the pulse of the latest storage issues as witnessed by our readership. This will be joined by additional advisory features on storage in virtual era, and data protection and backup.

You'll also find a number of white papers and case studies from the Zone's sponsor, HP, as well as an interview with an HP expert looking at the firm's claims that it can recover data 10 times faster than the nearest competitor, and guarantee to reduce backup capacity by a whopping 95%. So take a look around the Zone and be sure to check back for the latest updates.

The future of storage is not what you think

At the CBR Dining Club on 4th of June 2014 at Claridge's London, HP's Storage Division Director Chris Johnston described to the assembled C-level representatives of many of the UK's top brands that the future of storage had changed.

Data volumes, data management and most importantly, data deletion were now on the cards for companies they seek to cope with ever surging volumes of data generation.

For immediate requirements automation of storage pools is the next wave of data management. An honest conversation about managing costs requires companies to think about data value, said Johnston. "Companies need to consider what data they can delete," he said.

In a world where data generation is exploding from existing sources such as cloud and mobile, companies are already into the Exabyte range of requirements and are already planning for Petabytes of capacity.

And that is before we even start thinking about and storing everything generated from new sources such as machine to machine data and the Internet of Things.

Energy demands alone make the future of storage at these vast scales unviable.

HP, through its 3Par brand offers a single platform that scales from the mid to very high end and has a set of software tools and management approaches to efficiently respond to demand.

But look out to 2018 and beyond HP believes its R&D will deliver new storage built on memory, namely its Memristor technology.

The evening ended with a lively discussion on cost, management, alternative approaches to traditional storage strategies and the technical functionality of competing storage platforms on the market. Enormously changing times in the field of a properly Converged Storage Infrastructure.

A great night of fine dining and superb debate, thankyou again for all those who attended.

Keep your eyes peeled for more such fantastic evenings we are planning across the UK this summer and autumn.
